Since 2006, the Fonejacker has been making people laugh through its groundbreaking approach to prank calls, and society’s obsession with call centers. Though a full series of its own did not appear in Britain until a year after its debut, the worldwide phenomenon continues to grow.
The program’s star and creator, Kayvan Novak portrays a host of characters, and places prank phone calls to unwitting members of the public; often at their place of work. The consequences are most often very funny, and frequently side-splittingly-tear-inducing!
The main protagonist of the calls is the Fonejacker himself. Looking somewhat like a terrorist who has fallen on rough times, the image of his homemade balaclava and sunglasses just add to the whole effect.
But it is in the characters that the Fonejacker assumes to place his calls that the real fun starts.
One character that has proved extremely popular is George Agdgdgwngo; an African “scamster”. Taking its inspiration from the many individuals and organizations based in Africa that try to defraud people, George never seems to get it right.
He tries to convince the person at the other end of the phone to give him their bank account and sort code, perhaps to help free a pigeon stuck inside the bank’s vaults. Another memorable episode sees him claiming the vault needs a steam clean so the money needs to be removed. You almost feel sorry for him too; as he is so polite all the time.
Equally as much fun for the viewer is the caller from Indian call center Internet Service Providings; yes, with the “S” at the end for effect! That the young worker is not particularly confident, nor has a good product to sell is sure to be familiar to many.
Desperately trying to get people to upgrade their ‘internet service providings’ or ‘mobile phonings’ he is confident the deal he can do you is better. However, the prices offered are ridiculous and the worst you could ever wish to find. The whole call gets even better if people complain, and are put through to the manager. This really is priceless humor, snatches of which so many people will be familiar with.
These are only two of the more than twenty characters that Novak uses to play his stunts. From Criminal Dave; who is always in some sort of trouble following his latest botched job, or The Talented Mouse who is desperate for advice from a vet; the Fonejacker is sure to have you in stitches.
